During the journey, you\u2019re confused, intrigued, frustrated, inspired, and uncomfortable. Most significantly,\u00a0you&#8217;re motivated to get back out into the world and apply your hard-earned knowledge\u2026much like our current predicament with COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have the time and fortitude, Taleb\u2019s book is exceptionally insightful and worth the effort.\u00a0 For the rest, being antifragile means to gain from disorder, volatility, and other stressors.\u00a0 By contrast, the fragile wants stability and predictability, and the robust doesn\u2019t care.\u00a0 The wind extinguishes a fragile candle and enlarges an antifragile wildfire.\u00a0 A forest which endures periodic fires is more robust than one which hasn\u2019t withstood a fire in centuries. Shaping the body through ukemi, off-mat training, and diet. Practicing techniques until they are instinctive.\u00a0 Working through injuries.\u00a0 Maintaining commitment to train when life events and other competing priorities emerge. Assuming leadership roles in the dojo and Aikido community. Perhaps, becoming a teacher, responsible for transmission to new generations and maintaining a dojo. Wherever you might be on your path, consider the following principles Taleb promotes in <em>Antifragile<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\"><em>If one has nothing to lose, then everything is a gain,\nmaking one antifragile.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\"><em>One\u2019s ability to switch from one course of action to another is an option.\u00a0 Options allow you to benefit from the positive side of uncertainty without a corresponding serious harm from the negative side. Continuously set conditions which maximize your options, preferably with open-ended, not closed-ended payoffs.\u00a0 Avoid being \u201csqueezed\u201d &#8211; having no choice but to do something, regardless of costs.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\"><em>When you\u2019re fragile,\nyou depend on minimal deviation and demand predictability \u2013 a rarity in our\nincreasingly volatile world.<\/em><em> The antifragile need only the wisdom to not\ndo things which might harm themselves and to recognize and seize emerging\nfavorable outcomes.&nbsp; <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\"><em>Base decisions principally on fragility, not probability.\nFailure to predict a tsunami or economic meltdown is excusable; building\nsomething fragile to them is not.&nbsp; Natural\nsystems are antifragile thanks to layers of redundancy \u2013 high birthrates, extra\norgans (kidneys, lungs), the ability to store fat or lose tails to a predator\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px\"><em>By tinkering, one incurs lots of small losses at minimal\ncost to occasionally find something rather significant.&nbsp; A \u201closer\u201d or \u201cvictim\u201d is one who, after\nmaking a mistake or suffering harm, doesn\u2019t reflect and exploit the lesson for\ngain.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, which are you? Your dojo?
