Now 8th dan and\u00a0chief instructor at the San Diego Aikikai, Chiba recounts episodes\u00a0from his years as an uchideshi, and provides a detailed\u00a0explanation of the concept of shu-ha-ri, as well as explaining his\u00a0own view of the modern aikido world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aikido Journal:<\/strong> Sensei, I understand that you began\u00a0martial arts with judo and later switched to aikido. \u00a0Perhaps you could tell us about the way things were\u00a0in those days?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/biran.birankai.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_0660.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1870 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/biran.birankai.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_0660-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0660\" width=\"285\" height=\"397\" \/><\/a>A young Kazuo Chiba<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kazuo Chiba:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0Well, I liked budo quite a bit, especially judo. One\u00a0day I happened to find myself in a situation where I had to fight a\u00a0match with one of my seniors who was a nidan. He was a fine\u00a0person who had taught me quite a bit about judo ever since I first\u00a0entered the dojo, and he had been good to me in matters outside\u00a0the dojo as well. He had a small body but he did marvelous judo,\u00a0and could throw larger opponents without using any power. He\u00a0used a lot of taiotoshi (body drop) and yokosutemi (side sacrifice)\u00a0throws of a caliber you don\u2019t see much anymore.
